Last Light

By Beverly Waltz

The last light of a December day
grazes old pewter woodlands
enchanted where winter holds sway,
where brook water lies dazed
under a splintered facade of ice.

Only listen to how the wind bays
in the distance where fire
of sunset licks the backs
of charred hills as day
dies down the southwest
a blaze of rose-quartz.
