Apache

By Ronnie M. Anderson

Apache

He was born in Aquilla just
A year before,
A little Paint stud with
Color galore.
He was a magnificent horse, he grew
Tall and strong,
He looked like nothing could
Ever go wrong.
The kids they admired him
There was no doubt,
But in just one year they had to learn
What life was all about.
I got the call twenty August
Two thousand four,
She said he had colic,
When he moved he looked sore.
We got down there just as
Fast as we could,
We walked him for hours
As best as we could.
When the little stud lay down
To die,
There were not many standing without
A wet eye.
Now Apache is running where the water
Is clear and grass belly high,
The leader of his own herd
Up in the sky.
