A hurricane is approaching
A flurry of activity,
As the people prepare
The meteorologists rant on
About its strength
And our impending doom
Car parked in front of the garage door,
I stand out front
And see
The invasion coming
The dark horsemen
The Calvary thundering forward
Their war cries carried in the wind
And their booming drums beating a Cadence of contention
I shiver and run back in for cover
And as they draw nearer
Their arrows strain to hit us
Nicking all obstructions as they pass
The horses now near,
They slam into the trees,
The houses,
The telephone poles.
And now reaching the city,
Signs and streetlights receive the siege
For hours they ride by
Reigning destruction under their horses' bellies,
Throwing tornado spears
Their black armor enduring no defensive blows
For we cannot fight this natural army
Born in the wide seas.
And the war cries! The terrible howling!
Do they ever stop?
Sudden
Silence
the last lone warrior having galloped by
I open the door to destruction:
Great trees fallen
Buildings torn and broken,
And the lone bird flies
Over the city to see the lights,
And poles and signs
Thrown down to clog the now silent river of a street
And the bird reels and cries across
The dead things man made and made by God
As it returns to its hiding place
To endure the second onslaught
On the other side of the eye.
