Children, let me teach you how to read and write and spell,
Let me teach you how to do your math and do it very well.
Let me teach you why the wind blows and where the rivers flow,
May you also learn compassion, that's something you should know.
Let me teach you how to use a compass, to find your bearings on the earth,
Let me teach you how to appreciate each living creature's worth.
Let me help you celebrate your heritage each time our flag's unfurled,
May you also learn acceptance for each citizen of the world.
Children, let me teach you our nation's history,
Let me teach you to unlock scientific mysteries.
Let me help you understand what men are fighting for,
May you also learn that prejudice is something to ignore,
And may the rights of others have more meaning than before.
Let me teach you that respect is yours to loose or to keep,
Let me teach you that your actions last as loud as words you speak,
Let me teach you words once spoken can never be returned,
May you also learn respect tastes much sweeter when it's earned.
Children, let me teach you as gently as I can, that
The problems of tomorrow will be solved by your own hands.
Let me guide you toward the future with confidence and grace
May you touch the lives of others with integrity and faith.
