Life

By Juanice M. Martinez

The year is 1984.
The sixteenth of August, why should I say more.
My mom in the hospital at 5:45.
This is my birth.
The start of my life.
I never thought it would go wrong or I'd have a bad day.
Until the doctors had something to say.
It's kind of like the movies it doesn't feel real,
until you see the danger and know it's a big deal.
I remember the times,
I remember the days.
I remember everything but still have nothing to say.
I was only two, my sister only five.
Our mother left us as she floated on by.
She left my sister a couple of words.
If you need to talk to me call one of the birds.
If you find yourself ever wearing a frown.
I'll be there to keep your head up off the ground.
Were just sitting here kicking back, thinking of you.
Sitting here, kicking back missing you.
The only way to see you is in our dreams.
All we have left to say is momma rest in peace.
