Alex

By Cathy A. Harmon

Sweet smell of youth is long since gone.
My heart remembers what went on.
The sound of wails in the night used to cause me no delight.
Soft sweet breath upon my shoulder, downy hair beneath my hand.
Chubby fingers twined in mine.
Time has taken what I had, made you up into a man.
Oh sweet baby boy you are to me, will always and forever be.
Left is the smell of after shave, and a voice so deep it amazes me.
Hair no longer down, has turned into a thick dark crown.
Chubby fingers have disappeared, no longer twined in mine.
They wave goodbye to often, and leave me once again with what's never forgotten.
The memories of not just you, but who I was when you were new.
I cry sometimes for what is gone, time keeps going on and on, its changed me in so many ways, and left me with fewer days.
I am glad I had the chance to watch you turn into a man.
Oh sweet baby boy I love you so, it was and honor to watch you grow.
