Bees Use Sound To Assist In Swarming Flight

There is a theory floating around out there that in fact Bees use sound waves during swarming and perhaps during normal single insect flight to help with the aerodynamics of their endeavors? Some say this cannot be, yet it surely can as a lot can happen in 400 million years of evolution and Bees have shorter life cycles so consider the possibilities?

Recently in an online think tank a member blew everyone away with the revelation that the bees might be using sound waves as he stated;

"I suspect bees are supported in flight by sound wave patterns that they generate and manipulate. They share this skill with several other bugs that swarm.”

Then another think tanker startled the group be seconding the thought saying; "I would agree that most all flying swarming insects, perhaps some that do not fly use sound wave patterns for various purposes and it would seem judging from the sound of flying insects when they swarm that there is more going on then making noise for the hell of it.”

One thought could be the use of noise to scare off an intruder or use of sound waves to vibrationally scare an intruder. In the case of bees, hornets, wasps, yellow jackets, perhaps using this to scare off larger animals invading their home, which these swarming insects usually have much invested in time to build and seem to defend at all costs including in the case of bees, death due to loss of stinger [honey bees in N. America].

It would not surprise me and it stands to reason that the sound that the swarm makes could have evolved over millions of years to also aid in flight efficiencies and enhancements, so your theory stands the smell test by any evolutionary concept standards of how species adapt including all the sub theories of survival of the fittest or even cataclysmic evolution. Which more to the point seems to me to be the reason Locusts Swarm as they are docile loners most of the time and seem to be quite content in being that way.

Could this all be possible? Could the Bees be using sound to propel their larger body weight on those small fragile wings? Is this their secret until now? How can this bee? Well stay tuned folks because experiments are about to begin to see what evolutionary secrets these bees have been hiding from us all along? Consider this in 2006.
