Air purifiers can clean the smoke out of your house and save you from dying in a fire, as it will remove the smoke quickly and efficiently. There is a problem with this, as your home's smoke detector may be delayed in going off if the air purifier is too efficient, as it will be cleaning the air and feeding the fire fresh air too. Does this mean your home air purifier can save you and end up killing you too? In other words you will not die from the smoke but now you have a greater chance of dying in the actual fire its self and burn to death? Well, not exactly, but it is something to think about, especially as the consumer market for home air purifiers gets aggressive with better and stronger units.
A recent think tanker (me) has suggested that we incorporate smoke detectors in the air purifier its self, because the airflow will be going towards the air purifier rather than floating to the ceiling where most smoke detectors are located. You see the problem now? If we put smoke detectors inside the actual air purifier, when they reached a level of smoke that a fire would produce they would alert you and your family. You could then pick up the air purifier which should also have a 10-minute energy supply and walk with it to safety and it would clean the air and produce good air for you to breath while you get out of there. Think on this in 2006.
